I first learned about John Dies At The End from reading Cracked.com while I was supposed to be working. It has been on my to-do list for almost 10 years. I can honestly say I was not disappointed.
The plot may have been thin and special effects were very dated, but it’s such a fun movie! Two friends, John (Rob Mayes) and Dave (Chase Williamson), find a drug called Soy Sauce that lets them see and sense things that normal people can’t. They start seeing dead people that need help and monsters that need to be exterminated. As the monster infestation ramps up, the movie switches to Science Fiction and sends our heroes to another dimension to face the big boss monster. So yeah, it gets a little absurd, but it’s SO MUCH FUN!
There are a few heavy hitters that show up in this flick: Paul Giamatti (Sideways, The Illusionist, Fred Claus), Clancy Brown (Carnivale, Sleepy Hollow, Daredevil), Glynn Turman (A Different World, The Wire, Bumblebee), Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape Of Water). The central cast is also fantastic, many in one of their first roles. Also, John doesn’t die at the end. That’s not a spoiler.
Scores:
Suspense: 6/10 – there
are things we don’t know, but we don’t know we don’t know them.
Gore: 10/10 – there
are lots of beheadings…like, a clinicly obsessive number of beheadings.
Scares: 10/10 – some
things you can’t see without the Soy Sauce.
Humor: 10/10 – there’s
a doorknob that morphs into a dildo!
Bonus Points: 4 – the
number of heads shot or cut off including the fish.
Total: 40/40 – Someday
you will face that moment and at that moment, you will either face complete
non-existence or you will face something even stranger.
